Psalm 73:25-26 "Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."
My wife and I started reading through "A Godward Life" before we go to sleep each night. I enjoyed last nights reading very much, and this psalm that was quoted is one of my favorites. The main statement that the book circles around is "God is most glorified in us, when we are most satisfied in him." I believe that statement with all of my heart. It is clear al throughout scripture, "Rejoice in the Lord always... Delight yourself in the Lord... Restore to me the joy of your salvation..." As Christians we must taste the sweetness of God, if we do then obedience will follow. Here is a great illustration from the book that I will be keeping in mind:
You don't glorify a mountain spring by climbing up the mountain to it and pouring your bottle of water into it in an effort to try and add to it. Rather, you glorify the mountain spring by climbing to it and drinking from it and declaring how amazing the water is and then pressing on in light of the strength you have received from the spring.
Somehow a mindset of mere duty and service has found its way into Christianity. We try to replicate Jesus without coming to Jesus. We try to fix our lives without coming to the one who can repair us. Beware of serving Jesus with your rigid, white knuckled, no need for help, discipline. He made it clear that he came not to be served (Mk. 10:45). Rather, we serve the Lord correctly as we draw near to him to have all of our needs met, and then once all of our needs are met we are in position to go out and serve the body of Christ, and share the good news of Christ with the world. We must come to Jesus, on a daily basis and be satisfied by his glory, his very presence bursting forth into our existence.
May my heart be the heart of Asaph in Psalm 73, "there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you, O Lord, you are my strength and my portion forever."
